Our Anniversary Escape to Secrets Playa Mujeres

Four nights, one Preferred Club swim-up suite, way too many pork tacos, and a whole lot of “okay yes, I get the hype.”

After a busy season of planning dream weddings and honeymoons for my couples, it felt so good to sneak away for a few days and celebrate our own love story. For our anniversary, Matt and I spent four incredible nights at Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort, an adults-only all-inclusive located just north of Cancun.

As a travel advisor, I’ve sent couples here before, but this trip gave me the chance to experience the resort firsthand — not as the planner, but as the guest. And let me tell you… it did not disappoint.

First Impressions: A Slice of Paradise in Playa Mujeres

Secrets Playa Mujeres has this effortless mix of luxury and calm. The property feels secluded, but you’re still only about 35 minutes from Cancun International Airport. It also shares grounds with Dreams Playa Mujeres, which means Preferred Club guests get access to both properties — and yes, that is a very nice little perk.

When we arrived, the staff greeted us with cool towels, bubbly, and genuine smiles that immediately set the tone. It felt intimate and relaxed from the start. No chaos. No wild spring break energy. Just the right amount of music, ocean breeze, and “okay, I can finally exhale.”

Check-in was easy too. We checked in through the Preferred Club, had a waitress take our drink order while we waited, filled out a few forms, and then we were off to our room.

The Room: Preferred Club Swim-Up with Ocean View

We stayed in a Preferred Club Swim-Up Ocean View Suite, and honestly, it was the perfect choice for our anniversary trip. The room had a calm, modern feel with the luxury touches you want on a couples getaway: a king bed, soaking tub, and a swim-up pool right off the patio.

Through the palm trees, we could see a peek of the ocean. It was enough to remind us where we were without having to leave our little oasis. It was perfect for slow mornings before breakfast and even better for unwinding before dinner.

And yes, we absolutely took more than a few late-night dips in that pool. There’s just something about floating under the stars with a glass of wine that hits different.

Melissa’s Hot Take

If you can swing the Preferred Club swim-up, do it. This is one of those upgrades that actually changes the way you use the resort.

Dining & Drinks: Why Seaside Grill Stole My Heart

Secrets Playa Mujeres has a nice mix of à la carte restaurants and casual options, but the Seaside Grill became my favorite. The atmosphere was relaxed, oceanfront, and romantic — and the pork tacos? Hands down the best thing I ate all week.

I also loved having access to both Secrets and Dreams for more variety. Between beachside lunches, elegant dinners, and casual poolside bites, we never felt stuck eating the same thing over and over.

Also, shoutout to the bartenders. They remembered our drinks, laughed with us, and kept the vibe fun without being over-the-top.

Oceana

This one was a little tucked away and took us a minute to find, but the food was amazing. Between the two of us, we had crab cake, scallops, mahi, and grouper.

Seaside Grill

They served chips with pico, guac, and spicy salsa. I had huge, delicious calamari and the pork tacos, which were hands down my favorite. Matt had steak and said it was delicious.

Barefoot Grill

This poolside grill was amazing. We tried the Mexican burger, fish tacos, and chicken quesadilla. The burger had a little spice, but it wasn’t overwhelming. The fish tacos were so good.

Himitsu

This was the Asian restaurant we visited on our last night. We had dumplings, spring rolls, BBQ ribs, and Szechuan shrimp. The shrimp was a little spicier than I prefer, but still delicious.

Portofino

The Italian restaurant was delicious. I started with Caprese and had the Frutti di Mare as my main course. The seafood pasta had plenty of seafood and was so good. Matt had the fish piccata, and the portion was huge.

Gaucho

This Brazilian steakhouse is on the Dreams side. They come around slicing different meats, and there’s also a salad bar with appetizers. I was excited for this one, but surprisingly, it ended up being my least favorite.

Room Service & Coco Café

We ordered room service twice. The first time was late night on our first night. I got a burger, and Matt got the rolled chicken tacos. We also did room service breakfast one morning, and it arrived right on time, still nice and hot.

Coco Café was a lifesaver in the morning. My favorite was the iced vanilla latte, and of course they had sweets at night, so naturally I had to get the cheesecake and éclair. Obviously.

Weather in October: A Reminder to Trust the Tropics

We visited in October, which is hurricane season, so naturally I was stalking the weather before we left. The forecast called for rain every single day, but here’s the thing: it really wasn’t bad at all.

It would rain in quick spurts, then the sun would pop right back out like nothing happened. The air stayed warm, the beach was beautiful, and it never ruined our plans.

So if you’re nervous about traveling this time of year, don’t panic. Pack a light rain jacket and go with the flow. Full disclosure, a lot of guests didn’t mind the rain either. Many of them stayed in the pool with a drink in hand because… honestly, why not?

Would I Come Back?

Absolutely.

This resort checked all the boxes for what we wanted: peace, comfort, good food, and time to reconnect. We didn’t rush to do excursions or leave the property. We just enjoyed being there, and honestly, that was exactly what we needed.

The balance between relaxation and subtle entertainment was perfect for us. It had enough going on that you didn’t feel bored, but not so much that you felt like you accidentally booked a party resort.

Pace Yourself

This is not a spring break party resort, but there’s still plenty to do. Enjoy the quiet moments just as much as the entertainment.
