Our 3 Night Stay at Barceló Maya Riviera: The Honest, No Filter Review

If you’ve been eyeing Barceló Maya Riviera for your next adults-only escape, buckle up. We spent three nights at this massive Riviera Maya resort, and while some things absolutely delivered, others… well… not so much. You know I’m always going to tell you exactly what you need to know before you book, so here’s the full breakdown of our stay. The good, the bad, and the “did that drink just taste like cough syrup?”

Getting there: the quick overview

Barceló Maya Riviera sits about one hour from the Cancun Airport, tucked inside the huge Barceló complex of multiple resorts, malls, and shared spaces. The drive was easy, smooth, and honestly went by pretty fast.

But the moment we pulled in… that’s where the story really starts.

It started off rough…

We hopped out of our transportation expecting the usual warm welcome you get at most upscale all inclusive resorts. You know the vibe. Cold towel, welcome drink, someone pointing you where to go.

None of that happened.

Instead, we were standing there like, “uhhh… where’s the check in?” We eventually found our way to the Premium Lounge, which is where Premium guests check in, but the experience didn’t get much smoother there either.

Premium Lounge access is a nice perk, the arrival experience was not.

Check in took 1 hour and 30 minutes 🫨

Yes. A full hour and a half.

Why? Because this is where you make all of your dinner reservations for your entire stay, and at Barceló Maya Riviera, reservations are required at every single specialty restaurant.

If you come during a busy time, you’ll definitely need to be flexible with times and locations because everything books up quickly.

We were able to snag:

  • French restaurant
  • Mexican restaurant
  • Hibachi

Our room wasn’t ready yet, so we dropped our bags with the bell staff (which was a little chaotic to retrieve later) and headed straight to lunch.

Premium guests have access to extra snacks and a full bar inside the Premium Lounge. That part is genuinely a nice perk to have.

The rollercoaster of food and drinks 🎢

Let’s talk about the buffet first because… you’ll be seeing a lot of it.

Buffet only for breakfast and lunch 🍽️

There are no à la carte options for breakfast or lunch, which already limits variety. I tried a mix of everything, and honestly the buffet was underwhelming. Some items were okay, others were bland, and nothing stood out as “wow.”

Breakfast and lunch are buffet only, so variety depends on the daily spread.

Pool drinks 🍹

Cute vibes at the bar, but the drinks were thick, syrupy, cough medicine energy. Not my fave.

Also, there is no poolside food service and no servers walking around. If you want a drink, you get up and go to the bar. Not the end of the world, but very different from many other adults-only resorts in this price range.

The drinks looked cute, the taste was a gamble.

The room was beautiful… but here’s the truth

We booked a Premium Level Oceanfront room, and here’s the truth: the buildings aren’t directly on the beach, so the “oceanfront” view is more like palm trees with the ocean photobombing in the distance.

  • Comfortable bed (two queens pushed together, they split them for us no problem)

Room heads up

The shower has no door, and the frosted glass means you can see the silhouette of whoever is in there. Cute for couples, awkward for friends.

Pool time and dinner

After the buffet, we met up with friends at the pool. The pools are HUGE, with tons of chairs. Truly one of the biggest perks of this resort.

Mexican restaurant

This was our first specialty dinner and honestly a pleasant surprise. We ordered:

  • Al pastor tacos
  • Octopus with sausage
  • Shrimp and rice

Everything was flavorful and delicious. One of the better meals on the property.

Beach, pool, and the French restaurant

We started our day with the buffet again (same story) and walked down to the beach to check out the seaweed situation.

It was peak seaweed season, but Barceló does an amazing job keeping the beach clean. Major win. Full disclosure: if you are looking for a beach with turquoise water, this is not the resort for you.

The French restaurant

This dinner was easily the best meal of the entire trip.

We had:

  • Escargot
  • French onion soup with puff pastry
  • Beef Wellington
  • Two specialty rolls (cream cheese and jalapeño)
  • Orange crepes with vanilla ice cream

Everything was beautifully presented and full of flavor.

Massages, mystery meat, and hibachi

We grabbed breakfast, hit the pool, then headed to the Colonial Spa for 1 hour massages. We took the complimentary shuttle, which was a life saver. They do stop at every resort, so pack your patience as you wait.

Massage review

  • Relaxing
  • Nearly fell asleep
  • Slightly rushed with changing time

Overall: 7/10

Afterward we checked out the Mayan Mall, which was basically empty, and grabbed food at the Sports Bar.

And I’m just going to be honest… -100/10. Mystery meat vibes. We took two bites and left.

Hibachi dinner

The food was good and the restaurant décor was gorgeous and clean, definitely a solid end to the trip.

We had:

  • Ginger salad
  • Sushi
  • Steak hibachi
  • Fried ice cream

Final score: 6/10

Here’s the truth: this resort is stunning, clean, and great for pool lovers. But since food and drinks are a huge part of the experience for me, the hit or miss dining and buffet limitations kept the score lower.

This resort is great for

  • Adults-only vibes
  • Huge, beautiful pools
  • Travelers who don’t mind walking for drinks
  • Guests who like clean, modern rooms
  • People who value big resort complexes with lots to explore

This resort may not be for you if

  • You’re a foodie
  • Cocktails matter to you
  • You love poolside service
  • You want quick check in
  • You want true oceanfront views
